Airbnb Superhost Cleaning Tips That Actually Work
Superhosts don't just clean their listings, they clean them to a system. Here's what separates the five-star turnovers from the ones that hurt your ranking.
What Superhosts Do Differently Between Guests
Most Airbnb hosts clean their place. Superhosts clean it the same way, every single time. That consistency is what gets you the glowing reviews and keeps your ranking up on the platform. I've done turnovers for hosts all over Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Pasadena, and the difference between a host who keeps Superhost status and one who loses it usually comes down to a handful of habits, not talent.
Build a Room-by-Room Checklist and Actually Use It
This sounds obvious, but most hosts skip it. A written checklist removes the guesswork, especially when you're rushing between a late checkout and an early check-in. Your checklist should be specific enough that a brand-new person could follow it and hit your standards.
Here's what a solid Airbnb turnover checklist covers room by room:
- Kitchen: Wipe all appliances inside and out, check the microwave for splatter, run the dishwasher, wipe cabinet fronts, and restock supplies like dish soap, sponges, and coffee pods.
- Bathrooms: Scrub the toilet under the rim, wipe mirror edges and the base of fixtures, replace toilet paper and set it folded hotel-style, restock shampoo and soap to full.
- Bedrooms: Strip and remake beds with fresh linens, check under the bed for forgotten items, wipe nightstands and lamp bases, and check that all charging cables are working.
- Living areas: Fluff and arrange cushions consistently, wipe remotes with a disinfectant wipe, check behind furniture for debris, and make sure the Wi-Fi password card is visible.
- Entry and patio: Sweep the entry, wipe the door handle, and tidy any outdoor furniture.
Stop Eyeballing Linen Condition
Guests notice dingy linens immediately and they mention it in reviews. Superhosts pull linens on a rotation schedule, not when they look bad. A good rule is to retire a sheet set after 50 to 60 washes. Keep a par stock of at least three sets per bed so you always have fresh backup and one set in the wash.
In places like Beverly Hills and Santa Monica where guests are paying premium nightly rates, linen quality is one of the first things they compare to a hotel. Crisp, white, well-pressed sheets are a cheap way to close that gap.
Focus on What Guests Touch Most
High-touch surfaces are where most cleaners rush and where guests notice the most. Light switches, door handles, the inside of cabinet doors, the TV remote, and the faucet handles all collect grime and fingerprints fast. A disinfectant wipe on every high-touch surface takes about four minutes and it's one of the biggest things that makes a guest feel the place is truly clean, not just tidy.
Smell Is a Review Category Even When It Isn't Listed
Guests don't always write "the place smelled off" but they write "something felt not quite right" and that costs you stars. Ventilate the unit during the turnover, don't just mask odors with a heavy spray. Open windows for at least 20 minutes, check the garbage disposal with a baking soda flush, and wash any kitchen sponges or replace them every turnover. In Burbank and Glendale where summer heat can trap odors in smaller units, this matters even more.
Time Your Turnover Realistically
A one-bedroom takes a real cleaner about 90 minutes to do properly. A two-bedroom with a full kitchen and two bathrooms is closer to two and a half to three hours. Hosts who try to squeeze it into 45 minutes end up missing things, and the first guest review of the month tells the story. If you're managing multiple listings across Long Beach or the greater LA area, the math on doing it yourself doesn't always add up.
Do a Deep Clean Every 10 to 15 Stays
Standard turnovers maintain the surface. A proper deep clean handles what builds up underneath: grout lines, oven interiors, refrigerator coils, showerhead mineral deposits, baseboards, and window tracks. Skipping this is what leads to that point where a guest checks in and the place looks clean but doesn't feel clean. If you're not sure when you last did a real deep clean, schedule one now and reset the clock from there.
Our Airbnb turnover service can also be paired with a deep cleaning on a scheduled basis so your listing stays in reset condition without you having to manage the timing yourself.
Make It Repeatable, Not Heroic
The hosts who hold Superhost status over multiple years aren't working harder between guests. They've made the process repeatable. Same checklist, same linen rotation, same touch-up protocol, same deep clean schedule. That's what keeps the reviews consistent and keeps the ranking up through slow seasons and busy ones.
