Final Clean Checklist for General Contractors in LA
Before the punch walk, every detail has to be right. Here's the final clean checklist LA general contractors actually use to pass inspection and hand over a job site with confidence.
What GCs in LA Need to Know Before the Punch Walk
If you're a general contractor getting ready to hand over a finished project, the final clean is the last thing standing between you and a smooth punch walk. I've worked with GCs across Los Angeles, Pasadena, Burbank, and Long Beach, and the ones who run a tight final clean checklist are the ones who avoid call-backs, angry owners, and delayed sign-offs. This is what that checklist looks like.
Why the Final Clean Is Different From a Regular Clean
Post-construction cleaning is a completely different job from a standard house cleaning. Construction dust is fine and heavy at the same time. It settles inside cabinets, behind outlets, on top of door frames, and deep inside HVAC vents. Paint overspray lands on windows and hardware. Grout haze coats tile floors. Sticker residue stays on fixtures. A regular cleaning crew with mops and spray bottles won't cut it. You need a team that knows what they're looking at and has the right tools for it.
The Final Clean Checklist General Contractors Should Be Running
Exterior and Entry
- Sweep and blow all debris from the driveway, walkways, and exterior stairs
- Clean the front door, including the frame, threshold, and any glass panels
- Remove any stickers, tape, or protective film from exterior fixtures
- Wipe down the mailbox, house numbers, and entry lighting
- Check that the garage floor is swept and free of construction debris
Windows and Glass
- Clean all interior window glass, frames, tracks, and sills
- Remove paint overspray and sticker residue from glass surfaces
- Wipe down sliding door tracks and confirm they move freely
- Check skylights and transoms, they collect dust that is easy to miss
Walls, Ceilings, and Trim
- Wipe down all baseboards, door casings, and window trim
- Remove any visible scuffs or smudges from painted walls, carefully
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and smoke detectors
- Check corners and crown moulding for dust and cobwebs
Kitchen
- Clean inside all cabinets and drawers, including the shelves and faces
- Degrease the range hood, inside and out
- Clean the inside and outside of all appliances
- Wipe down countertops and backsplash, including grout lines
- Polish fixtures and remove any installation stickers from appliances
- Clean under and behind the refrigerator space if accessible
Bathrooms
- Remove grout haze from tile floors and wall tile
- Clean and polish all fixtures, faucets, and hardware
- Wipe inside vanity cabinets and medicine cabinets
- Clean mirrors, removing any paint or adhesive residue
- Scrub the toilet, inside and out, including the base and behind it
- Check exhaust fan covers for dust
Floors Throughout
- Vacuum all hard floors before mopping to avoid spreading fine dust
- Mop with appropriate cleaners for the floor type, hardwood, tile, and LVP each need something different
- Vacuum carpeted areas thoroughly, check edges and corners
- Remove any adhesive, paint drips, or protective covering residue
HVAC and Vents
- Wipe down all supply and return vent covers
- Vacuum dust from inside the vent openings as far as accessible
- Replace filters if that is part of the scope
Common Spots That Fail the Punch Walk
In my experience with post-construction jobs in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and Glendale, the same spots get flagged over and over. Inside cabinet corners collect sawdust. Window tracks fill with drywall dust. Light switch plates have fingerprints and paint transfer. The gap between the bottom of the toilet and the floor gets skipped. Shower doors have hard water and grout haze from installation. These are the things owners notice first because they look at details, not square footage.
What Drives the Cost of a Post-Construction Clean
GCs ask me this all the time. The main factors are the size of the home, the condition it was left in after trades cleared out, whether there is grout haze removal or overspray work needed, and how many levels the building has. A rough, heavily worked job site takes longer than a newer build where trades were careful. We ask a few quick questions about the project and text back an exact quote. No guessing, no surprise add-ons on site.
Get It Right Before the Owner Walks Through
A clean job site tells the owner you care about the finished product as much as the structure. It protects your reputation and reduces call-backs. Whether you're finishing a single-family remodel in Pasadena or a multi-unit build in Long Beach, we can be on site and ready when your schedule says go.
