Got the Keys? Clean These Things First

Congratulations on the new place. Before you start moving furniture in and deciding where the couch goes, there are a few things you really want to clean first. This applies whether you bought in Pasadena, rented in Long Beach, or just closed on a condo in Burbank. Previous occupants leave behind more than you can see, and a fresh start means actually starting fresh.

I tell every new homeowner the same thing: clean the home before your stuff goes in. Once the boxes arrive, you lose access to floors, baseboards, and corners for months, sometimes years.

Start With the Things People Touch Most

Light switches, door handles, cabinet knobs, and drawer pulls. These get touched constantly and almost never get cleaned during a standard move-out. Wipe every single one down with a disinfectant. It takes maybe twenty minutes and it matters more than scrubbing the bathtub twice.

Same goes for the inside of the refrigerator if it came with the place. Pull out the shelves, wash them in the sink with warm soapy water, and wipe down the walls inside. You have no idea what spilled in there or how long it sat.

The HVAC Vents and Filters

Los Angeles County has a dust problem. Between the dry Santa Ana winds, construction activity, and the general particulate matter in the air, vents accumulate a lot of debris. Pull off every vent cover and wash it. Replace the HVAC filter before you move in, not after. A dirty filter means you are circulating the previous owner's dust through your air from day one.

If you are moving into an older home in areas like Glendale or a pre-1980s property anywhere in the county, consider having the ducts inspected. That is a job for an HVAC company, not a cleaning crew, but it is worth mentioning because it is easy to overlook.

Bathrooms: Go Deeper Than the Surface

The toilet base, the caulk line around the tub, the grout between tiles, and the inside of the vanity cabinet. These spots look fine from across the room and are often disgusting up close. Scrub the grout with a stiff brush. Check the caulk for mold and replace it if needed. Clean inside the vanity before you put any of your products in there.

Showerheads in Southern California collect heavy mineral deposits from our hard water. Unscrew the head and soak it in white vinegar overnight if the flow looks weak or uneven. Simple fix, makes a real difference.

Kitchen: Inside and Behind Everything

Pull the oven away from the wall. The gap between the oven and the counter is one of the worst spots in any kitchen. Food, grease, and dust collect back there for years. Clean it before the oven goes back in place.

The inside of kitchen cabinets and drawers should be wiped down and lined before your dishes go in. Check under the sink for any signs of old leaks, mold, or pests. If you spot anything concerning, deal with it now before boxes of cleaning supplies are stacked on top of it.

Floors and Baseboards Before the Furniture

Mop hard floors and clean the baseboards while the rooms are still empty. This is genuinely the only time it is easy. Once your couch and bed frame are in, those corners become a pain to reach. If the home has carpet, consider a professional carpet clean before move-in. You do not know what is in those fibers and steam cleaning removes odors, allergens, and stains from previous occupants.

Windows and Window Tracks

Window tracks in LA homes are often packed with dirt, dead insects, and old debris. Use a stiff brush or an old toothbrush to scrub them out, then wipe with a damp cloth. Clean the glass inside and out while you still have easy access. In areas close to the coast like Santa Monica, salt air adds an extra film to glass that needs a proper window cleaner to cut through.
