Spring Cleaning Guide for LA Homes
Spring cleaning in LA looks a little different than the rest of the country. Here is a guide built for the way we actually live out here.
Spring cleaning is a thing everywhere, but in Los Angeles it hits different. We do not have the same "just survived a brutal winter, open the windows and air the place out" thing that the rest of the country does. Our version is more about dealing with the stuff that is unique to living in LA. Here is a spring cleaning guide that actually makes sense for how we live out here.
Deal with the Dust
If you have lived in LA for more than five minutes, you know about the dust. Between the dry climate, the Santa Ana winds, and the constant construction happening everywhere, dust accumulates fast. Spring is the perfect time to do a thorough dust removal.
- Hit every baseboard and door frame in your house
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and the top of cabinets
- Pull furniture away from walls and clean behind it
- Wipe down window blinds (this alone makes a massive difference)
- Clean your air vents and replace your HVAC filters
That last one is huge. If you have not changed your HVAC filter since last year, you are blowing old dust around your house every time the system kicks on. Swap it out. Your sinuses will thank you.
Clean Your Outdoor Spaces
This is the LA-specific part. Most of us have patios, balconies, or yards that we use year-round. By spring, outdoor furniture has collected pollen, dust, and general grime. Give everything a good scrub down:
- Wipe down all outdoor furniture
- Sweep or pressure wash the patio
- Clean outdoor light fixtures
- Wash any outdoor cushion covers
- Clear out your grill if you have one
If you have a pool, this is a good time for a deep clean on the surrounding area too. We have clients in Pasadena and Beverly Hills who have us do an indoor-outdoor spring clean every year.
Tackle the Kitchen
Spring is when you should do that deep kitchen clean you have been putting off. I am talking about:
- Cleaning inside the oven (self-clean mode does not count, sorry)
- Pulling out the fridge and cleaning behind it
- Wiping down the inside of the fridge, tossing expired stuff
- Cleaning the range hood and filter
- Going through the pantry and tossing anything expired
- Scrubbing the sink and garbage disposal
Refresh the Bedrooms
Wash your pillows. Seriously. Most people never wash their actual pillows, just the pillowcases. Throw them in the washing machine (check the label first). While you are at it:
- Rotate or flip your mattress
- Wash the mattress cover
- Clean under the bed
- Go through your closet and donate what you have not worn in a year
Windows and Screens
Clean windows make your whole house feel different. Inside and out, plus the screens. In LA, window screens collect a crazy amount of dust and pollen. Pop them out, hose them down, and let them dry before putting them back.
The Garage
The garage is where good intentions go to die. Spring is the time to actually deal with it. Sweep it out, organize the shelves, and get rid of the stuff you have been stepping over for months.
