The Vacation Rental Cleaning Checklist California Hosts Actually Need

If you're running a short-term rental in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, or anywhere else in Southern California, you already know the turnaround window is brutal. Guests check out at 11, new guests arrive at 3, and everything in between has to be spotless or you're looking at a bad review. I put this checklist together based on what we do on every Airbnb turnover we handle. Use it yourself or hand it to whoever cleans your place.

Start Before You Walk In the Door

Check the previous guest's checkout time and confirm the next check-in. Give yourself a realistic window. A one-bedroom in Burbank and a four-bedroom in Beverly Hills are not the same job, so don't plan them the same way. Bring enough supplies for the full property, including backup trash bags, spare linens, and extra toilet paper rolls.

The Room-by-Room Checklist

Living Areas and Entryway

• Remove all trash and check under cushions for forgotten items
• Wipe down all surfaces including remote controls, light switches, and door handles
• Vacuum upholstered furniture and rugs
• Mop hard floors
• Clean glass doors and windows where fingerprints show
• Straighten décor and make sure everything is back in its original spot
• Check that all lamps work and replace any burned-out bulbs

Kitchen

• Empty and wipe out the refrigerator, toss anything left behind
• Clean the stovetop, oven, and microwave inside and out
• Run the dishwasher if there are dirty dishes, then unload and restock
• Wipe all counters, the backsplash, and cabinet fronts
• Clean the sink and shine the faucet
• Empty and reline the trash can
• Restock coffee, sugar, oil, or whatever your listing promises
• Check that all small appliances are clean and in place

Bedrooms

• Strip all beds completely, including mattress protectors if they need washing
• Put on fresh linens, tight hospital corners if your brand warrants it
• Dust all surfaces including nightstands, ceiling fan blades, and headboards
• Vacuum the floor and under the bed
• Empty every drawer and closet of anything guests left behind
• Check that hangers are uniform and the closet is tidy

Bathrooms

This is where guests form their strongest first impression. Do not rush this room.

• Scrub the toilet inside, outside, and behind the base
• Clean the shower or tub, removing any soap scum or hair
• Wipe the mirror until there are zero streaks
• Sanitize the sink and faucet
• Mop the floor and get into the corners
• Restock toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and hand soap
• Put out fresh towels folded neatly, and a hand towel at the sink

Outdoor Spaces, Patios, and Pools

A lot of rentals in Pasadena, Long Beach, and Glendale have outdoor areas that guests photograph and mention in reviews. Don't ignore them.

• Sweep patios and remove debris
• Wipe down outdoor furniture
• Empty outdoor trash cans
• Check pool or hot tub area for towels, cups, and anything left behind
• Make sure the grill is clean if it's listed as an amenity

The Final Walkthrough

Before you lock up, walk every room as if you're the guest arriving for the first time. Smell for odors, check for hair on any surface, confirm the WiFi password card is visible, and make sure the keys or lockbox code are ready. Take a photo of each room. If something goes wrong later, you'll have documentation.
