How to Deep Clean Your Kitchen Like a Professional

A kitchen deep clean is one of those jobs most people put off until things get bad. Grease builds up behind the stove, grime collects under the fridge, and that sticky film on cabinet doors just keeps getting worse. I've cleaned kitchens in homes across Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Pasadena, and Long Beach, and the process is always the same when you do it right. Here's exactly how we approach it.

Start at the Top, Work Down

This sounds obvious, but most people don't follow it. If you scrub your countertops first and then wipe down your upper cabinets, the crumbs and grease from above land right on your clean surface. Start at the ceiling and work toward the floor, every single time.

  • Wipe ceiling fan blades and light fixtures with a damp microfibre cloth
  • Clean the tops of upper cabinets, which collect a thick layer of greasy dust over time
  • Work down to cabinet fronts, then countertops, then appliances, then the floor last

Degrease Before You Wipe

The biggest mistake I see is spraying a surface and immediately wiping it. Degreaser needs dwell time to break down cooking grease. Spray your cabinet fronts, the backsplash, the stovetop surround, and the range hood, then leave it for five to ten minutes before you touch it. You'll use far less elbow grease and get a much better result.

For heavy grease buildup on a range hood filter, soak it in hot water mixed with dish soap and baking soda for at least fifteen minutes. The grease lifts off in sheets. Scrub with a stiff brush, rinse, and dry before putting it back.

The Oven

If your oven has a self-clean cycle, be careful. It gets extremely hot and can trigger smoke alarms, especially in tighter homes in Burbank or Glendale where windows are smaller. For a manual clean, coat the interior with a paste of baking soda and water, avoiding the heating elements, and leave it overnight. Wipe it out in the morning and spray with a little white vinegar to clear any residue. For stubborn baked-on carbon, a plastic scraper does the job without scratching.

Appliances Inside and Out

Here's what a proper kitchen deep clean covers for appliances:

  • Refrigerator: Remove every shelf and drawer, wash them in the sink with warm soapy water, wipe the interior walls with a baking soda solution, and clean the rubber door gaskets where mould loves to grow
  • Microwave: Microwave a bowl of water and lemon juice for three minutes, then wipe the steam-loosened grime right off the interior walls
  • Dishwasher: Pull out the filter at the bottom, rinse it under running water, scrub with a toothbrush, and run an empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack
  • Stovetop: For gas burners, remove the grates and soak them. For glass-top stoves, use a ceramic cooktop scraper at a low angle to lift baked-on spills without scratching

Countertops and Sink

Clear everything off the counters completely. Clean the surface, then clean the items before putting them back. This is where most quick cleans fall short. The area behind your toaster or under your coffee maker is usually the grimiest spot in the whole kitchen.

For the sink, scrub with a non-abrasive powder cleanser and pay attention to the drain and the area around the faucet base. That spot collects water scale and soap scum fast, especially in areas with hard water, which is very common across Los Angeles County.

Cabinets and Drawers

Pull everything out of your drawers and cabinets once a year at minimum. Wipe the interiors, check for expired food, and clean the items going back in. Cabinet fronts need a degreaser safe for the finish, whether that's painted wood, laminate, or real timber. Test any new product on a small hidden area first.

Finish With the Floor

Sweep or vacuum before you mop. Get into the corners and under the toe kicks at the base of your cabinets. Move the fridge and stove out if you can, even just a few inches, to clean behind them. The buildup back there is usually significant, especially if it hasn't been done in over a year.

How Often Should You Deep Clean a Kitchen?

For most households, a thorough kitchen deep clean every three to four months keeps things manageable. If you cook daily, every two months is better. A standard clean between those sessions handles the surfaces and floors, but it won't touch the oven interior, the refrigerator shelves, or the range hood filter.

If you're moving into a new place in Beverly Hills or Long Beach, or finishing a renovation, the kitchen needs more than a standard pass. That's where a move-in clean or a post-construction clean makes a real difference, since construction dust and previous-owner grime require a completely different approach.
