Your Contractor Just Left. Now What?

Renovation dust is its own beast. It is not like regular house dust you wipe off a shelf. It is fine, heavy, and it travels. Drywall particles settle into cabinet hinges. Concrete grit works into grout lines. Sawdust finds its way behind the refrigerator somehow. If you just moved into a freshly renovated place in Pasadena or you had a kitchen gut job done in Burbank, the cleanup phase matters just as much as the build phase.

Here is a practical order of operations to follow once the tools are gone.

Step 1: Let the Dust Settle, Literally

Wait at least a few hours after the last worker leaves before you start cleaning. Construction dust is still floating when they walk out the door. If you vacuum right away, you are just pulling airborne particles through your filter and blowing some back out. Give it two to four hours, open a window if the air quality outside allows it, and then start.

Step 2: Change Your HVAC Filter First

This is the step most people skip. Construction dust clogs filters fast. If you run your HVAC with a clogged filter, you are circulating particles through every room in the house. Swap it out before you do any other cleaning. If the renovation was large, check it again a week later. Homes in drier parts of LA County like the San Gabriel Valley can see filters clog faster because the dust is drier and lighter.

Step 3: Wipe From Top to Bottom, Always

Start at ceiling height and work down. This is non-negotiable. The order goes:

• Light fixtures and ceiling fans first. Use a damp microfiber cloth, not a feather duster that just redistributes.
• Walls and baseboards next. Check for splatter, paint overspray, and adhesive residue.
• Countertops, shelving, and appliances after that.
• Floors last. Vacuuming before wiping surfaces means you are vacuuming twice.

Step 4: Tackle Surfaces That Hold Grit

Tile grout, window tracks, and door tracks trap construction debris like a net. Use a stiff grout brush and warm water for tile. For window tracks, a flathead screwdriver wrapped in a damp cloth gets into the channel. If your renovation involved any concrete or thinset work, those particles are abrasive and need to be removed properly before you mop, or you will scratch hardwood or luxury vinyl flooring.

A Note on Hardwood Floors

Do not wet mop hardwood after construction. Vacuum first with a hard floor attachment, then use a barely damp microfiber mop with a cleaner rated for hardwood. Excess moisture causes swelling and warping, which is the last thing you want after spending good money on a renovation.

Step 5: Clean Inside Cabinets and Drawers

If the renovation was in or near the kitchen, dust gets inside every cabinet. Pull out everything, wipe the interior walls and shelves, and wipe down what you put back in. Same goes for bathroom vanities. In Long Beach or Santa Monica rental units where we handle a lot of move-in and move-out cleaning, cabinet interiors are almost always overlooked by tenants and previous owners alike.

Step 6: Windows and Glass

Construction leaves a hazy film on glass that regular glass cleaner struggles with. Use a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water, or a dedicated glass cleaner with a lint-free cloth. Circular motions leave streaks. Use straight strokes, horizontal on one side and vertical on the other, so you can tell which side the streak is on.

Step 7: Know When to Call for Help

A bathroom refresh is one thing. A full kitchen remodel, a room addition, or post-construction cleanup after major work in Beverly Hills or Glendale is a different scale entirely. By that point you are dealing with layers of fine particulate across the whole house, possible drywall dust in your air ducts, and surfaces that need more than a wipe-down.
